2017 Hurricane Season Analogs

5-17-2017

The 2017 hurricane season is almost upon us, and June 1st marks the start of the season. Some interest is shown in the analogs when looking at previous years for what we can expect in the current year given similar conditions to previous years. The years where the sea surface temperatures and overall upper air patterns are similar are taken into account. For this analog, the similar years are 1968, 1981, 1984, 1996, and 2000. Any major hurricanes those years could have a similar impact to any hurricanes that form this year. Analogs are not a direct representation of what will happen, but are more or less an overall guide. Tracks can also vary from the ones shown. However, this should give a general picture as to what to expect for the upcoming season. Doesn’t look like a whole lot of direct hits, but as usual, Florida gets the highest count.
